Advocacy in Action Through Self Awareness

Join our FREE "Advocacy in Action Through Self-Awareness" Workshop this Wednesday, June 15, 2022 with the wonderful Rebecca Adams.

Bec Adams has been a social justice activist her entire life. Commencing her advocacy at the ripe old age of 8-year-old on the steps of Victorian Parliament wearing a sandwich board demanding government funding for single mothers.

Bec has worked across the human service system for over 20 years and is committed to challenging the systems that prohibit social freedoms and individuals’ growth. Having worked in social housing, crisis accommodation, youth, community and women’s services specifically with domestic violence, mental health and alcohol and other drug programs with thousands of clients, she became astutely aware that the systems are failing to address significant social problems with a deficit discourse
regarding client’s resiliencies, capacities and potential.

In her career Bec has advocated successfully for Youth Occupancy Agreements allowing tenancy rights for young people in line with Human Rights, represented the ACT in National Housing Pathways Submits, Women’s Employment Pathways Roundtables Federally and Disability Networks locally.

For the past 10 years, Bec’s advocacy has been focussed on workers’ rights as a workplace delegate for the Community & Public Service Union (CPSU) and in 2021 she was elected as Section Councillor to represent all staff in the Education Directorate. From this seat at the table, Bec has successfully bargained for 5 days additionally disability leave on top of current personal leave entitlements, for workers with disabilities. This leave provides disabled staff with the required medical maintenance leave needed for such workers. For the past year, Bec has advocated for sexual harassment and assault to be listed as a notifiable incident and has just had agreement in principle for this amendment to be made in the Work Safe Act 2011.

Bec lives by a very strong principle that whatever you are passionate about, is the driver of your success. Bec is passionate about women’s empowerment, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s social justice and collectivism for social change.

“We all have a fire inside us, a passion project that lights us up. When we know ourselves, and know the power of our own passion, we light up internally and this resonates in the world. Don’t ever be afraid of being your most luminous self”.

As an NLP graduate, Bec’s strong voice for change has been further enhanced to make sure her every word, hits the mark for success.
